Upcoming events

City of London Research Conference 2011

The City of London will hold its next research conference, themed around London’s place in the global economy, in January 2011 in a City venue.

There will be presentation of key recent and upcoming research reports from the authors, along with discussion from expert guest panellists, and opportunities for question and answer sessions and discussion around key topics.  

The conference is free to attend, but places are limited. To register your interest in attending please email economicresearch@cityoflondon.gov.uk

Avoiding Corruption Risks in the City: the Bribery Act 2010

On 25th May the City of London’s Chairman of Policy and Resources, Stuart Fraser, hosted a breakfast seminar at Painters’ Hall to mark the launch of the Transparency International (TI) commissioned report ‘Avoiding Corruption Risks in the City: the Bribery Act 2010’.

John Drysdale and Robert Barrington of TI gave an overview of the research and key findings, followed by insights from international lawyer Jeremy Carver and Chief Executive of British Enterprise Graham Hand. The panel members then took questions from the audience. The event was attended by representatives from a range of City businesses concerned about how the new Bribery Act will affect business practices.

Volunteering – The Business Case

On 15th April non-executive director of Nomura, Kieran Poynter, hosted the Lord Mayor at Nomura House for a successful event to launch the latest City of London research report ‘Volunteering – The Business Case’.

The report was presented by the authors, Corporate Citizenship. The Lord Mayor and Mr Poynter were joined on the panel by Director of the Education and Employers Taskforce, Nick Chambers, and Director of Research and Policy at the Chartered Institute of Management, Petra Wilson. The event attracted a large turnout of Human Resources and Corporate Responsibility professionals, and the report was very positively received by those in attendance, who welcomed this first hard evidence that volunteering programmes can provide quantifiable benefits to businesses in terms of skills development.

The Competitiveness of London's Business Property Offer

On 18th March the City of London  hosted a research seminar at MIPIM, the annual property conference in held in Cannes, to launch this report. The event was chaired by the City of London's Chairman of Policy and Resources. Following a presentation of the key findings and recommendations from report authors CBRE, there was a panel discussion including representatives from developer Pramerica, Deutsche Bank and the NYU Schack Institute of Real Estate, and time for a detailed  audience Q&A session.

The City's Role in Providing for the Private Equity Financing Needs for UK SMEs

On 10th March 2010, the City of London's Chairman of Policy and Resources hosted a breakfast seminar to launch this report. The consortium of consultants who produced the report presented key findings, followed by responses from panellists Xavier Rolet, Chief Executive of the London Stock Exchange, Stuart Popham, Chairman of TheCityUK, and Cyril Theret from PLUS. A lively audience question and answer session with the panel followed.

The Annual Research Reception

On 23rd February 2010 Stuart Fraser, the City of London's Chairman of Policy and Resources, hosted the annual research reception, which launched the Research Review 2009, a publication that provides an overview of all the research publications produced by the City of London during 2009. The reception also offers an opportunity to thank our research associates and partner organisations, and provides a networking opportunity for the research community.

London Futures Forum

On 20th November 2009, the City of London with GLA Economics hosted the London Prospects Forum. At this critical point in the global economic recovery the Forum assessed progress on recovery and prospects at the global, UK and London levels, looking at the implications of the recent and ongoing financial crisis and the process of exit from global recession, global imbalances and the fiscal challenges facing the UK. There were three presentations by leading UK forecasting consultancies followed by expert discussant responses and a Question and Answer session. Download the presentations below:

'The Role of Private Finance in Paying for Long-Term Care in an Ageing Society' breakfast

On 24th September, the Lord Mayor hosted a breakfast seminar to explore the challenge of providing for pensions and long term care for an increasingly Aging UK society and in the light of the current government policy consultation on long term care and future challenges. The meeting comprised an experienced group representing practitioner, academic, government official and parliamentary viewpoints. Professor Les Mayhew presented a CoL commissioned research paper “The Role of Private Finance in Paying for Long Term Care” as a focus for discussion and reflected upon the Government’s Green Paper “Building Britain’s Future – Shaping the Future of Care Together”. 

City of London Annual Research Conference

The City of London’s annual research conference was held on Monday 15 June 2009 at the London Stock Exchange.

The conference focussed on the key findings of three research reports recently published by the City of London:

The authors of each report introduced their findings before expert discussants made their response, and question and answer sessions followed. GFCI5 was presented by Mark Yeandle of Z/Yen Group, Assessing the Effectiveness of Enforcement and Regulation was introduced by Mark Tilden, and An Assessment of the City's ICT Infrastructure, which was published on the same day and launched at the event, was presented by Gill Ringland of SAMI consulting.

'The Future of Asian Financial Centres - Challenges and Opportunities for the City of London' breakfast

On 3 November 2008, the Lord Mayor and Stuart Fraser hosted a breakfast at Mansion House to draw on the Lord Mayor's recent visits to China and the Far East and to mark the publication of the latest in the City Corporation’s series of commissioned research reports.

Entitled The Future of Asian Financial Centres - Challenges and Opportunities for the City of London, the report analyses the challenges and opportunities for UK-based financial services from the leading Asian financial centres of Hong Kong, Singapore and Tokyo.

'The City of London's Supply Chain and its Relationship with the City Fringes' research launch

On 24 September 2008, Stuart Fraser hosted a seminar to launch the report The City of London's Supply Chain and its Relationship with the City Fringes written by cebr.

Mark Pragnell of cebr presented the key conclusions of the report before a Q&A session took place.

Annual Research Conference

On 22 May 2008, Stuart Fraser, Chairman of the City of London’s Policy and Resources Committee, hosted the annual research conference at the London Stock Exchange.

The conference focussed on the key findings of three research reports recently published by the City of London.

Presentations were made by Alan Wilson of Oxford Economics on The Impact of City Businesses in addressing Social Disadvantage; Mark Tilden of CRA International on The Impact of Taxation on Financial Services Business Location Decisions; and Mark Yeandle of Z/Yen on The Global Financial Centres Index (GFCI) 3.

‘The Impact of Recent Immigration on the London Economy’ research seminar

On 15 August 2007, Michael Snyder hosted a seminar to discuss the report The Impact of Recent Immigration on the London Economy written by the London School of Economics and Political Science.

Christine Whitehead and Ian Gordon of the London School of Economics and Political Science presented the key conclusions of the report before a Q&A session took place.

‘The Competitive Impact of London's Financial Market Infrastructure’ roundtable

On 7 June 2007, Michael Snyder hosted a high-level roundtable to discuss the report The Competitive Impact of London's Financial Market Infrastructure written by Bourse Consult.

Lynton Jones of Bourse Consult presented the key conclusions of the report before the roundtable discussion.
