Winners of Chairman's Cup 2009

The winners of the Clean City Awards Scheme 2009 were presented their awards by Sherriff David Wootton and Robert Duffield, Chairman of Port Health and Environmental Services Committee at the annual ceremony held in the Mansion House at the end of January.

What is the Clean City Awards Scheme?Clean City Awards logo

Essential though it is, waste management seldom enjoys a high profile within a commercial organisation except when it goes wrong. Launched in 1994, the Clean City Awards Scheme aims to develop partnerships with City businesses, both large and small by raising the profile of responsible waste management and recognising and rewarding good practice by encouraging businesses to Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.

Aims of the Scheme

  • Promote good waste management practices
  • Encourage waste minimisation, reuse and recycling
  • Reduce the amount of waste being sent to landfill
  • Ensure compliance with Duty of Care regulations
  • Encourage City businesses to take pride in their surroundings
  • Provide a Forum for City businesses to exchange waste management initiatives
  • Reduce smoking related litter

Judging and the awards ceremony

Old Library set up for a ceremony There are three levels of awards, Merit, Gold and Platinum and an overall winner for a Small, Medium and Large Site.

An awards ceremony and luncheon is held each year in Mansion House for all members recieiving Gold and Platinum Awards. To find out more about the awards and the judging, please see The Selection Process.

 

Environmental Best Practice Meetings

Environmental Best Practice Meetings are organised throughout the year, where members are invited to hear from waste management organisations and advisors. The meetings also provide a forum for members to exchange ideas on waste management, waste minimisation, reuse and recycling. If you would like to attend, please contact the team by email or tel. 0207 606 3110.

CIWM Waste Awareness Certificate

The CIWM Waste Awareness certificate has been specifically designed for employees who have responsibilities for dealing with waste in companies and organisations that produce waste as part of a manufacturing, retail or service process.

The aims of the course are to provide an introduction to waste management and to provide the knowledge skills and understanding to improve the management of waste.

  • Reduction, reuse, recovery and recycling of waste
  • Management of waste
  • Introduction to waste auditing
  • Safety and environmental aspects of waste management
  • Legal obligations such as “Duty of care”

The course concludes with a short open book, multi choice assessment test. Successful candidates are awarded a certificate from the Chartered Institution of Waste Management.
