A beacon in tackling climate change


The City of London Corporation has been awarded Beacon Status by the Improvement and Development Agency (IDeA) for its efforts in tackling climate change. The judges were particularly impressed by the City's efforts to engage the business community, and the City's pioneering climate change adaptation strategy.

Case studies

The City of London Corporation owns and manages open spaces within and outside the Square Mile, including Epping Forest and Burnham Beeches. We have started adapting these spaces to climate change impacts and we are also working on minimising the carbon footprint of their use and maintenance.

Recognising the growing importance of sustainable development for the City as a whole and for businesses in particular, the City of London Corporation encourages and supports businesses in their efforts for sustainability. As part of this commitment, we co-ordinate the City Environmental Forum, which is comprised of CSR and Sustainability managers from firms located in the City and beyond.

Effective waste management is an integral part of reducing a firm’s carbon footprint. The Clean City Awards Scheme is an initiative of the City of London Corporation designed to develop a partnership with City businesses. While the object of the Clean City Awards Scheme is to raise the profile of effective waste management, its environmental best practice group takes wider sustainability issues into consideration.

We are fully conscious that the effects of climate change will continue to impact upon us for many years to come. Therefore it is imperative that the City of London adapts to the impacts of climate change and ensures that it will be able to continue to deliver its high quality services and maintain the City’s infrastructure.

Climate change is putting up new challenges for Open Spaces Management, with extreme weather events becoming more likely, including heat waves as well as storm events. Trees and other plants can suffer if the ground is too wet during winters or if there is not enough water in the summer. Adapting skills and management techniques to the changing climate is important in ensuring that green spaces can continue to thrive.

Our Open Spaces Team at the City Commons has worked with the local residents association, English Nature and the Environment Agency to restore part of the river Rye. This project is an excellent example of addressing issues relating to climate change and improving biodiversity at the same time.

Building on the carbon emission reductions we have already achieved, our committed energy management team continuously monitors and manages our energy consumption. The team is currently developing a comprehensive carbon reduction strategy to further reduce our carbon emissions.

The Sustainable City Awards recognise and reward best practice in sustainability across the UK. Entries are welcomed from business, public and voluntary sector organisations. The awards are one of six feeder schemes to the European Business Awards.

The City of London is keen to reward innovation and encourage activities that push the boundaries of environmental responsibility.  The Considerate Contractors Scheme now has an Environment Award which recognises such achievement and members of the Considerate Contractor Scheme are encouraged to apply.
