Adapting homes

If you or someone living with you has a disability and you live in the City of London, we may be able to help you adapt your home so that you can continue to live independently.

If you are disabled there may be physical barriers that make it difficult for you to carry out day to day activities. An adaptation may enable you to move around your home and access its facilities more easily. It may also make it easier for your carers to look after you.

Typical adaptations include:

  • Stair lifts and through floor lifts
  • Ramps, rails and step lifts
  • Door widening for wheelchair access
  • Adapting kitchens by providing low level units
  • Level access showers and other bathroom alterations
  • Improving heating

Council housing - home adaptations
The Council provides adaptations to Council properties to suit the needs of disabled people or people with mobility problems. These can include providing a rail, lever taps, ramp, shower or stairlift. If the adaptations are non-essential a tenant has the right to carry out improvements with permission from the local authority housing department.
Disabled people - home adaptations and aids
If a client is visually impaired, hard of hearing or has other disabilities for which he/she may need special equipment or adaptations to his/her home the local authority will provide such equipment which will assist in overcoming difficulties subject to an assessment of personal needs to determine eligibility.
Home improvements - disability facility grant for a private property
The disabled facilities grant scheme provides financial assistance towards the cost of essential adaptation work to make a house fit for a disabled person.
